COVID-19 Leaders

There’s a different kind of leadership required right now. There are a lot of subject-matter experts telling you what’s going to be required in the future, but very few are talking about what’s required right now.

I wrote last week about the three leadership traits, empathy, perspective, and consistency, that Lincoln had in abundance and that I felt were in short supply with today’s leaders. Those three traits are critical, not only in the future, but right now. Today’s leaders must model those traits in the following ways.

  1. Create a feedback loop. The time is now to gather feedback from all areas in your organization and all your people, especially those on the front lines.
  2. Relieve people from unnecessary work and activities. The time is now to remove the bureaucracy and allow your people to do the work you hired them for.
  3. Stop leaning into hierarchy. The time is now to allow your people to get out of their silos and work collaboratively across and up and down the organizational chart.
  4. Highlight your organizations mission and vision consistently in every piece of communication. The time is now to remind everyone on a consistent basis why you exist by letting them know what’s next, why it’s important and what’s being done about it.
  5. Don’t allow the crisis of the Now to keep you from moving to the Next. The time is now to know as much as possible about what’s going on around you now, both internally and externally, so that you can respond to what’s next with a plan instead of that ‘deer in the headlights’ look.

There are a lot of leaders today making plans about the plans they’re planning on planning. Today’s COVID environment will not wait for any of them.

I’m not one to do much of anything without a plan. At the same time, I’m also not one to wait around for something to happen. There are times when the best course of action is to ‘just do something’, because doing nothing isn’t an option.

Communicating In The Right Key Is Critical. In today’s workplace, there’s an abundant amount of conflict, which in many cases is simply people not communicating correctly. There are consistent principles we can learn and apply that help each of us to communicate in a genuine and caring way. They can help build people up and bring unification among those we work with. The quality of performance and productivity are largely determined by how people communicate and get along. 

Action Step:
Reflect this week upon how you can improve in the area of showing greater appreciation toward someone in your personal and professional life. By improving upon this one consistent principle, you’ll see your relationships respond in kind. The key is to be sure the appreciation you show is genuine.
